Texts arise in contexts, and texts can consequently rarely be separated from the cultural and historical moments from which they emerge. However, when context takes precedence over text and texts become messengers of ideas already known and expected, we should pause. In three brief segments, and from theoretical as well as methodological perspectives we will here address some of the challenges we as educators in literature and culture often confront.

i) “’Some bookes are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to bee chewed and digested’ (Bacon 1597): Close Reading as Method.” (Lene Johannessen)
ii) “Reflections on ‘The Danger of the Single Story’” (Tijana Przulj)
iii) “Ready-Made Critique as the Danger of a Single Story: Greta Gerwig’s Barbie” (Henriette Rørdal)
